Most Popular Free Blogging Platform

May 7, 2006 · Filed Under Blogging · 2 Comments

Which is the most popular free blogging platform among bloggers? According to Technorati, blogspot has a 44% of overall market share follow by MSN with 23%. Based on the Technorati queries part of their study, it seems that the most commonly-used blogging platforms are:

blogspot 44%
msn 23%
livejournal 8%
aol 1%
splinder 1%
20six 1%
typepad 1%
blog 1%
fc2 1%
hatena 1%

Surprisingly MSN has a 23% market share, maybe it is due to its user friendly interface but overall the design is not flexible, you’re not allowed to insert codes (adsense) and it seems that every msn space user has the exact layout - boring and dull. I would highly recommend blogspot as the first choice, mainly because of its flexibility and it belongs to Google.

blogging platform market share

If wordpress and other paid blogging platform like Movable Type are taken into consideration, Blogspot still hold the first spot with a command of 35%. Although Wordpress has a mere 2% market share, they are made of mainly hardcore bloggers, which is why there are so many wordpress templates available while blogspot user has a limited choice of templates to choose from.

How To Make Money From Blogging & Blogs

May 6, 2006 · Filed Under Blogging · Comment

Alot of people tried to find ways on how to make a living thru blogging, and sad to say that not many of them manage to make it. Reason begin that blogging for money is not something that happens over night. It is not something that one can succed without hard work and most of all patiences.

Some blog for the joy of blogging, while other blog because of money. I’ve noticed that Wordpress user tend to blog for money while a high percentage of Blogspot user blog for the joy of blogging. If you have a steady flow of traffic, there is no harm in making some money from blogging.

Three reasons why one can’t make a living from blogging:

1. Lack of patience - Blogging is not a lottery, you don’t get rich overnight. Give yourself a time frame of one year.

2. Blog Topic - Having the right topic is the key to success, and if you got thousand of visitors per day and you blog mosly about you life, chances are you’re not going to make money from adsense. Choose the right topic, blog about things that you like and things that you got a wide knowledge about. Choosing the right topic means you’re unlikely running out of things to write about.

3. Domain Names and Hosting - This is the most important factor in blogging for money rules. You may have good articles and lots of readers, but without a good search engine ranking, your chances of getting hits are hopeless, it doesn’t matter what blogging platform you are using, be it Wordpress, Movable Type or Blogger, you need your very own domain name and hosting. Google tend to rank websites with their own domain names higher than those without. Remember, visibility in search engine is the key to success.

It doesn’t matter if you make money out of blogging, the most important thing is that you enjoy blogging, and when you do something you like the most, you’ll succeed in life.

Harvard University Blog in Wordpress MU

The Harvard Berkman Center blog server has been switched to WordPress. They are using MU. According to their official website, they encourage anyone with a harvard.edu, radcliffe.edu, or hbs.edu email address to host a blog with them.

Makes me wonder why in the world would I want to? Would they filter out certain articles if they contain poison words, or articles that crit the professors? Blogspot is still my first choice when it comes to free blog hosting.

Search Engine War Continues With Amazon A9 Powered by MSN Live

May 5, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · 1 Comment

There is no official press release from the internet giants Google and Microsoft than Amazon A9 is now being powered by MSN Live. Its a very sudden move and a big lost for Google, this makes me wonder why would Amazon dump Google for Microsoft Live when it is so obvious that Google’s search engine is way much powerful and accurate than Microsoft’s search engine.

Microsoft fans all over the world have rejoiced about this as this is the first big victory for their Windows Live line of products. (If there is any fans out there). Yawn.

My suspect is that Microsoft must have offered Amazon a sweet deal, probably an link to their website for intergrated search into the next Microsoft Windows Vista. I can’t think of anything else that could possibly makes Amazon ditching Google for Live.

Gecko and Fly is just few weeks old and it is ranked fourth place in A9.com for the keyword “Gecko and Fly”. This goes to show how inaccurate the search engine is, but then this is suppose to be good news to bloggers like us.
