21 giugno 2006 · Archiviato sotto Sci e tecnologia · Commento

June 17, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · Comment

mac vs windowsCreativeGuy has an interesting post on the pro and cons or a mac, I’m never a mac user and never will be in the near future. The reason being is that I’m brought up in a Windows environment and am so use to it. Yeah, there are Mac in my design college but so far I find them not so user friendly as what most people describe. No right click button until last year?

Not to mention that Mac has only a handfull of games, such as Solitaire and WarCraft 3, that is about it. With no option to buy a good Creative Sound Card, what is the point of buying a good labtec or Altec Lansing Speakers? I guess Mac users are stuck with that lousy quality sound that pump out from their CPU/Monitor.

I don’t want to give the impression that Macs don’t have any problems, but I’m just saying that it’s not fair to judge Apple’s QA based on their iPod battery life. The ball isn’t in their court on that one, the people who make batteries have to come up with a better solution, first. Macs aren’t immune to problems, but then neither are any computers, really. Maybe they have slipped on their QA, I don’t know. Personally, I haven’t had any issues (knock on wood) with any Macs that I’ve owned, but my friend, who has the same PowerBook as me, had an issue with the latch. They were very good about fixing it, though.

I believe the instability of Windows is because people has the option to install various softwares and chances are these third party software will eat up or shall I say mess up the Windows Registry sooner or later. Unlike Mac, everything is inhouse, and with the source code, mac programmers are able to code the programs due to the better understanding of the I/O of Mac O/S.

I’m not a big fan of Bill Gates and his Microsoft, but I sure hope Mac or Linux will eat up a few percent of their market, and I’ll be the small percentage of rebel, I am thinking of installing Linux in my old comp.

Bill Gates Retiring From Microsoft

June 16, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · Comment

Bill Gates announced his decision to retire from Microsoft in 2008 to focus his attention on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at fighting infectious disease and improving high schools. This must be music to his rivals in Silicon Valley.

In the Microsoft Corp. press release, “Microsoft Corp. today announced that effective July 2008 Bill Gates, chairman, will transition out of a day-to-day role in the company to spend more time on his global health and education work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The company announced a two-year transition process to ensure that there is a smooth and orderly transfer of Gates’ daily responsibilities, and said that after July 2008 Gates would continue to serve as the company’s chairman and an advisor on key development projects.”

For your information, microsoft boss Bill Gates was photographed by the Albuquerque, New Mexico police in 1977 after a traffic violation (details of which have been lost over time). How can it be lost? This a mystery. Read more about Bill Gates at wikipedia.

The New Digg On The Block

June 16, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 1 Comment

I just simply couldn’t believe this, a clone version of Digg - Netscape Beta? Where is the innovation? AOL has virtually copied all the features from Digg like how people leave a story, user vote for it and depending on the vote numbers, the story appears on the homepage or is buried down.

Another great blow to Netscape, the user interface is identical but from my experience, a sidebar will appear when you browse away from the protal, with the url of the blog masked. This kind of marketing strategy belongs in the 90’s. You have to give the user the freedom to navigate away and stop forcing them to stick with your portal. Google is a good example of how to build loyalty without bombarding them with ads.

But Digg is destined for bigger things than tech news. The above screenshot of Digg version 3 (not showing? wait for it), leaked from a beta tester a week before its launch, reveals categories for “Business” and “World News.” This should give Digg a leg up on AOL’s rumored general-interest Digg killer.
