google maxthon browser screenshot previewRumors has it that Google has acquire a minority stake in a Chinese/Israeli startup, which develops the infamous Maxthon browser. It has 80 million downloads so far and majority of the user are from China, it is believed that the browser contribute 25% of the search traffic to Baidu. We cannot confirm what is the motive behind the acquisition, but there might be a good chance Google might ditch Firefox Referral button in favor of Maxthon Browser.

Founded by the very young and brilliant Jeff Chen in 2003 in China, Maxthon became very quickly popular in Asia and all over the world. The big difference with other browsers is that Maxthon is based on IE code which makes the software very familiar from the beginning but with a few twists.

Then again, Maxthon is based on IE code, which is indirectly under Microsoft’s control, would Google help their arch-rival? Could it be that Mozilla might have piss Google with the harsh words few months ago?
