Offline Web Applications

Google has launched new technology in beta that can allow web applications like email or calenders to run on- or offline. This could possible be the biggest threat that Microsoft predicted years ago when they launch their own version of browser (IE) going head to head with Netscape.

Google Gears is an open-source application allowing developers to use test their product for free, this is turning things on its head and making the browser the engine but then again how far can on and offline application go?

Having said this, heavy duty applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk CAD and games would never run on a browser, which means they’re likely to stick with Microsoft’s Windows for many more years to come.
