The actual illusion is this: Stare into the cross in the middle and not only will the purple dots disappear, but you will also see a green dot going round in a circle!

It doesn’t have a lot to do with the picture itself. If you do it right, you can stare at anything for a little while and everything around that point will start to disappear. The image may, however, speed up this process.
