200 lashes for Saudi gang rape victim

A recent headline of Telegraph UK, to make a long story short, a Saudi woman was sentenced to 200 lashes and 6 months prison for being a gang rape victim, the initial sentence was 90 lashes but was subsequently increased to 200 because the women was found guilty of influencing the media – sympathy.
What a bunch of idiots, how could they do this? Isn’t it wrong morally and ethically to punish the victim?
According to the Arab News newspaper, the woman was gang-raped 14 times. Her offence was in meeting a former boyfriend, whom she had asked to return pictures he had of her because she was about to marry another man. The couple was sitting in a car when a group of seven Sunni men kidnapped them and raped them both, lawyers in the case told Arab News. The former boyfriend was also sentenced to 90 lashes for being with her in private. – Source: Telegraph UK
The Islamic Sharia law is not in tune with modern society, these religious laws does not comply with today’s plural ethic modern society; we’re heading towards a global village, a multi cultural world. Coming from an Islamic country – Malaysia with a religious composition of 60% Muslims and 40% others, and an ethic composition of 50% Malays, 25% Chinese, 8% Indians and the rest, I need to stress that Islamic Sharia Law doesn’t work, one of the reason – What if a Muslim and non-Muslim are involved in an argument say divorce? or Khalwat (Close Proximity with the opposite sex)? or marriage?
These Islamic Sharia Laws are written hundred of years ago by some Muslim scholar, it does make sense during their golden age, close proximity was deem as something unhealthy during the olden Chinese culture, same goes with the western culture where they segregate children, church goers and many more according to gender, but these rules evolve, the entire world evolve and adapt to current changes and demand.
Religion should be a personal matter, religion, politics, and state should not mix together.

November 21st, 2007it’s not because sharia or something else impersonal, there always b a confused thinking had been played there, so it’s not depend on which more modern, so without referring to religion directly, why does people tends to corrupt the law?

I was shocked the moment I read newspaper article on this. I believe that every religion or as Muslims call it, rules, should change with time and adapt itself.
After reading different articles and newspapers and some more research on this issue, I found out that the Lawyer for the victim, after the trial was interviewed by media where it was expressed that the punishment for the culprits is very less as compared to the damage they have done. And that’s then the Lawyer was debarred from practising.
I don’t see any confusion here, as Nanda expressed.
It is just that the books and the rules and the judgements are age old, women are still mere slaves or sex-slaves, nothing else.
Without adaption, it would hard to survive. Darwin’s theory !

okay, I live in Saudia Arabia, and what many of you see arabs as, really isn’t true, I have to disagree “Debalina”
women aren’t men’s slaves, nor do we live in the old age, we are very modern and very advanced and educated, what’s funny is how many westerns think we go to school on camels, and that egyptians live in pyramids, i find it ridiculous how little you think of our society, and i think that especially reporters should stop accusing countries of shit they didn’t do. a women does not get lashed if she was raped, nor does any human being LIVE after being raped by 14 men, it isn’t physically possible. i guess many people have a limited idea of who we are, how we are, and how we live.
