Below are some really useful tips extracted from Google TipJar:

Save Money On Fuel

  • “Clean your car’s air filter. A clean air filter can improve your gas mileage by up to 7%, saving you more than $100 for every 10,000 miles you drive in an average vehicle.”
  • “Ideal time to fill gas (petrol) is during night time. That way you will get more in.”
  • “Did you know that when you drive at a speed that is over 40 mph using the air conditioner uses less fuel than having the windows open? In the summer you can save fuel and travel cool!”

Save Money On Gas and Electricity Bill

  • “LCD monitors use less electricity and generates less heat than CRT monitors”
  • “Remove the dust on the heat exchanger bars behind the refridgerator: the dust insulates the bars which drives up the electricity used. Fridges are the 2nd biggest user of power.”

Save Money On Travel

  • “Use public transportation. Subways, buses, trains, etc., are all part of the travel experience. Make it fun. And avoid unnecessary transportation costs all together, and save time too, by grouping your activities by geographical area.”
  • “Look early for travel deals on the internet, use price comparison site”
  • “Travel in the off-season. Hotels and attractions are cheaper and you won’t trip over so many tourists.”
  • “Backpackers should never follow the advice given by Travel Book on the hotels they recommend, instead look out for neighboring hotels, they are cheaper and offer more or less the same facilities.”

Save Money On Car Insurance

  • “Shop around for auto and homeowners’ insurance: Before renewing your existing policies each year, check out the rates of competing companies (see the website of your state insurance department).”
  • “Research new auto insurance, you can save hundreds of dollars. Dont assume the company you have been with for yrs has the best deal, usually it is not.”
  • “Think before submitting an insurance claim. My rule of thumb is that I won’t submit a claim on a loss that is less than twice my deductible. So for a $250 deductible on an auto loss, I’ll pay out of pocket any loss up to $500.”

Save Money On Credit Cards

  • “Request a reduction in the interest rate on your credit cards. As with home equity loans, credit card companies sometimes are willing to reduce the interest rate. It can’t hurt to ask.”
  • “Create a spreadsheet of all of your expenses for a month, including credit card and cash purchases. At the end of the month, examine your expenses and see what can be reduced or cut. The first step to reducing your costs, is knowing your costs.”
  • “Use credit cards that provide cash-back or other benefits, but ALWAYS pay them off each month to avoid finance charges.”
  • “Reduce credit card debt by $1,000. That $1,000 debt reduction will probably save you $150-200 a year, and much more if you’re paying penalty rates of 20-30%.”
  • “Stop using credit cards and pay off the ones you have. Debit cards can be used in lieu of credit, and you will be spending money you actually have.”

Save Money On Credit Cards

  • “Rent rather than own. Just don’t assume that buying is the better investment. If you calculate the interest you pay on a mortgage, the cost of insurance and maintenance, buying is often much more costly than renting.”
  • “Refinance you mortgage. If you can reduce your interest rate by one percent or more, it is often beneficial to refinance. This is particularly true for those with high rates due to less than stellar credit scores.”
  • “Track your expenses for free from various bank, credit, mortgage, car loans etc at http://www.mint.com. It is free and have intuitive user interface.”
  • “Pay your mortgage payments bi-weekly, rather than monthly. If you pay monthly, you’re only making 12 two-week payments (that’s 24 payments), but if you pay bi-weekly, that’s 26 payments! Two more payments a year adds up over time.”

Save Money On Water

  • “Simulate a Low Flush Toilet: If you don’t have a new, water-saver toilet, you can simulate one by putting a clean brick, or a sealed plastic bottle filled with pebbles, or a weighted mason jar, into your toilet tank.”
  • “Collect rain water to water you’re garden. Even something as simple as a 5 gallon bucket will fill up quickly in a heavy storm, then use it to water your plants.”

Many people use a brick or a water saving device in the toilet that holds back water for all flushes…this will lead to more and more clogs. After you fix your current clog lets put the plunger to rest. Take the brick out, you need the water for that full flush. You can however save water and not risk clogs when you flush “the Yellow” down as that just takes a fraction of water. The answer is to buy a dual flush toilet conversion kit and install it in your current toilet. The clogs will stop and you will save water on the flush for a #1…
