Recorded a home made video but it is too large to fit your hard disk? Perhaps the best way to have all of your collection at the click of a button without loading the DVDs is by compressing them. The following tutorial will guide you on how to compress the video without losing the quality.
- Download K-lite Mega Codec Pack and Virtualdub
- Install Virtualdub, when you’re done, unpack and install K-lite Mega Codec Pack
- Run Virtualdub and open the avi file
- Select the ‘Video’ tab then select ‘Compression’. From the list select Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
- Go to ‘File’ menu and select ‘Save As’ and click Save in the new window

Based on my own experiment, I managed to compress and reduce the size of a few avi videos by as much as 23 to 27 times of the original bytes. Very useful for those with lots of multimedia videos, especially those into multimedia and animation, this is a life saver. Imagine the amount of DVDs and external hard disk required? Not to mention the amount of money saved.
