According to online reviews, HP Officejet Pro 8500 is a very good printer with many features such as dual-printing, scanner, fax, wireless and ethernet, Eco Star labeled, however, it is not cat friendly. This printer makes a loud high frequency noise where my cat leaves the house as soon as the printer is turned on. Not ideal if you happened to install this printer in a quiet environment.

I have a Sandisk memory stick 4gb and i am not sure were to put it in. Can you please me?
I purchased the 8500 and cannot take the high pitch sound. I called HP support indicatd I needed tech support which was useless. While I was on the phone for 2 hours I searched 8500 high pitch sound and found everyone is having the problem. I hear the sound after hours. This printer needs to be recalled.
I just found this thread/review and am finding out the same. The high pitched noise is unbearable. One of my co-workers can’t hear it at all (must be deaf to that particular frequency) but everyone else can and in a small office the level of noise is unacceptable. Noise during printing is, but the high frequency noise is there ALL the time printing or not. How could this have slipped by QC?? Are HP QA/QC testers deaf?
I too find the high-pitched noise unbearable. If it was just while printing would be tolerable but it is constant while the printer is turned on, until it goes into power-saving mode. I will be returning for a refund. Although the reason for return probably won’t make it back to HP design/manufacturing, maybe they’ll see these forum comments.
I just got this printer and the high pitch noise is really irritating. I just opened the box about an hour ago and installed the drivers. The noise is killing me. I’m sending it back.
I just purchased the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless & I’m experiencing the same problem with the high-pitched noise constantly being emitted from the printer, even in standby mode! It’s driving me nuts & literally giving me a headache! I can even hear it from several feet away, on the other side of the room! I have 2 other HP printers plugged in in the same room as well & they emit NO noise when in standby mode (I tested it by turning off the 8500 & then back on & in standby mode.) I am so disappointed, this unit had all of the specs I was looking for (including rare 8.5″ x 14″ flatbed scanner). I’m also having some issues with the print quality for photos; in looking at the the photos I’ve printed, holding them in the light, you can see what appears to be “layers” of ink within the photo (on both HP & Kodak photo paper)…almost like it’s embossed on there. I tried several times, even changing settings & then printing the same pic with same settings on my HP PhotoSmart 7960 (which is ~5 years old) & the photo quality from my old PhotoSmart is SO much better than the OJ Pro 8500! Did I just get a dud or did Consumer Reports & CNET get it wrong?!? Is it only some of these printers making this noise or are that many people just hard of hearing? I researched long & hard before committing to this unit; only this Web site & Amazon reviews were the only places that mentioned the high-pitched noise, so I thought it was an anomaly; I picked it over the Photosmart Premium b/c of the less-expensive ink & the scanner size.
I don’t think that I’ll be keeping this one (unfortunately, I purchased for cheaper from another Web retailer, but now I’m going to get charged a 15% re-stocking fee + s/h charges, so I’m going to end up paying ~$60 & still have no printer & now have to try to figure out an alternate solution.) I don’t get it…I’ve had great luck with HP products for the last 15 years (several PCs, printers & scanners…some are still working & have lasted nearly 7 years….my LaserJet 1000 is a workhorse, but alas, is now obsolete in HP’s eyes, as is my ScanJet 4960C), since apparently Vista on my new HP laptop (and soon Windows 7), is not compatible with these older HP products; so, now after shelling out $1100 for a new laptop, I now have to also upgrade my printers & scanner as well as b/c HP has decided to not update the drivers for these products (even though they still work great). Wish I had stayed with XP, but my PC died on me, so I had no choice but to upgrade.
I am extremely pissed off with this Officejet Pro 8500. I purchased one from best buy, got it home and the unit had serious problems with printing. Had lines all over the pages even after the alignment. Took it back and got my money back.
Then went to Comp USA and picked up the same model for $50 less. Figured it was just a damaged unit before. I get home and now this printer makes this annoying high pitch noise that doesn’t stop. I will be taking this back and will never buy a HP printer again.
