How to flush your DNS cache? One of the problem faced by Windows XP user is the DNS cache, whenever a connection fails, it stores the unresolved DNS entries for a few minutes before flushing it. This can be troublesome when debugging sites, for as long as the negative DNS cache is stored, your server will continue to give you the find server error message. By flushing out the unresolved DNS cache, you won’t be getting the error message anymore.
Go to command prompt via ‘Start’ –> ‘All Programs’ –> ‘Accessories’ –> ‘Command Prompt’
Rebooting your computer is another option. For a long term solution, try stopping Windows XP from storing the negative entries into the cache. All you need to do is change the settings in the registry.
- Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ Dnscache\Parameters
- Build a new DWORD value called NegativeCacheTime and give it a value of 0
The default time is 5 minutes. Change the value to 0 or 60 for 60 seconds.
