Am looking forward to set up my own web hosting server, not for profit but the thrill of learning something new. What I need is something simple, something easy to use and free. Here are two of my favorites open source web hosting control panel software for Linux:

Webmin (screenshot above) is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely. What I like about Webmin is its simple user interface and ease of setting it up.

GNUPanel is a powerful web hosting server administrator software, it allows you to create public and private hosting accounts, accept Paypal, Cuentadigital and Dineromail payments, send messages to users, create redirections, use the integrated support ticket system, control bandwidth, disk space and define policies for accounts suspension and many more. Some of its unique features:
- Web hosting billing
- Web hosting accounting
- Web hosting provider
- Web host reseller
- Web server monitoring
- Web server performance monitoring
- Web server security
- Web server statistics

For server management, especially for hosting email or web sites, you may want to look at Plesk. I think they offer a free version that supports 1 domain. I’ve worked with many control panels and have found Plesk to be one of the best.
Now if you are trying to learn, I recommend not using a control panel at all. Webmin, for example, does things the “webmin” way. The knowledge you gain may not translate to working on a stock Linux distribution.
Use a GUI as this will speed up your administration by 100’000%. Consider not listening to command-line-freaks, they want to make all easy things complicated. They are doing what most IT-supporters are doing: sustaining their jobs by holding onto old technology) Soon these leeches will be getting the boot. Command-line-administration will use up valuable time and you will gain no advantage at all. GO GUI!
Search for and find open source server software, it is out there!
