How to set up fax service, client and fax server in Microsoft Windows XP and Vista? Why pay for a physical fax machine when your computer is as good or perhaps better than a physical fax machine. Your computer have a better and faster processor speed, you can que a long list of fax, all faxes are digitally archived.
Setting Up and Configuring Windows XP Fax
Microsoft shared fax service, server and client features are the ideal software for all your faxing needs, It may not be powerful but it does what it promise, not to mention it come ‘free’ as one of the many components in Windows. The fax service isn’t automatically installed in Windows XP. To install the fax component:
- Go to ‘Control Panel’, and click ‘Add or Remove Programs’
- Click ‘Add/Remove Windows Components’. Choose the ‘Fax Services’ check box, and then click Next.
Note: You’ll need a working modem, the fax service will not work without a modem. When the fax component is installed, your next step is to configure it.
- Click ‘Start’, point to ‘All Programs’, point to ‘Accessories’, point to ‘Communications’, point to ‘Fax’, and then click ‘Fax Console’
- Go to the ‘Tools’ menu in ‘Fax Console’, select ‘Configure Fax’, A Fax Configuration Wizard will appear. Click Next to start configuring your fax information
- Include your name or your business name and your fax number on the ‘Sender Information page’
- On the Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes page, in this case it is your modem
- On the Transmitting Subscriber Identification (TSID) and Called Subscriber Identification (CSID) pages, enter your business name and fax number
- On the Routing Options page, specify how incoming faxes will be handled
p.s. Microsoft fax number is not free, it merely replaces the physical fax machine.

My computer has Vista 64 Bit, but there is no Windows Fax & Scan program on it. I looked everywhere, but there is no fax program. I don’t know why?! I couldn’t find any clue. If you can help, please contact me.
