How to perform a complete PC backup and restore for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 using the build in system restore feature? This feature is useful in certain situation where malware might have caused your Windows computer to crash once too often.

In Windows Xp and Vista : Start –> All programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> System Restore. Alternatively, you can type ‘rstrui’ into the search box or run in Windows.

The procedure is more or less the same in Windows Vista and 7, don’t be confused by the screenshot above, I’m using the classic theme.

Note: Remember to backup your files prior to restoration. Based on my own experience, recently created documents prior to the restored point might be missing from the hard disk, always backup your files! Try Cobian Backup freeware.

Did you receive the ‘System Restore did not complete successfully’ warning? Try restoring your Windows settings in safe mode. To enter safe mode, hit the F8 button during boot up before the Windows boot up logo appears.
