Google OCR, also known as Google Tesseract OCR is now available online. Google OCR via Google Docs is in beta mode, it is not as accurate as the offline software.

The OCR function is not yet part of Google Docs and is not available in the toolbar interface, visit Google Codes – OCR for the beta version. Just in case you’re wondering, Microsoft Office has its very own OCR, known as Document and Imaging. Quite accurate I would say, however as off version 2007 and above the OCR feature is not installed by default. Learn how to enable OCR feature in Microsoft Office 2007.

If you want to OCR online for free and also use one that is simple and easy try CVISION.
I have recently made a comparison between Google OCR, Ocropus, and Tesseract. When i used the same input image, Google OCR provided better results than Tesseract, which in turn provided much better results than Ocropus, although Ocropus uses Tesseract as the recognition engine….how strange!
I nearly tried all free online OCR services. All of them give more or less the same quality. I recently came across sciweavers.org/free-online-ocr, which provides a good balance between high accuracy and very clean user interface. The service does not imply any restrictions so far, no ads, 33+ langaues, multiple image formats.
