There is no such thing as free lunch, which is not true. Have you heard of the AVG AntiVirus freeware? It is a basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to download for free. Limited features, no support, for private and non-commercial use only.
What’s the catch? None, the only drawback is the slow update and lack of firewall. Other than that, it is a pretty solid and free antivirus from AVG. According to AV-Comparatives, AVG scored a 4 star out of 5, making it a reasonably reliable anti-virus. Some of its features:
- Real-time safe internet surfing and searching
- Quality proven by 80 million of users
- Protection against viruses and spyware
- Compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP
I am using both Norton and AVG on my laptop and desktop. Based on my own experience, the best practice is to avoid downloading unknown attachment, or visit suspicious websites.
