AVUS (Anti-Virus Update Service) is a small utility working in background, which does scheduled updates to the virus definition file of the well-known AVG Free Anti-Virus 8.5.

Actually the statement that AVG Free updates only on startup is not correct and is misleading. AVG Free can also update itself regularly. Moreover, by downloading whole update files, you do not use the efficient differential mechanism and end up downloading huge files that also take much longer to apply.
