Which is the best Digital DLR camera for outdoor, indoor and wedding? Which is the best best point and shoot digital camera? Being a person who is into photography (am not a professional photographer, just an amateur), people kept on bombard me with the same question, and most of them are beginners. Before I bought my DSLR camera, I was torn between Nikon and Canon, slightly skewed towards Nikon for its looks but could not justify the reason for choosing it when it comes to specification and technical reason.
I then seek advice from a professional photographer, and he ask:”What color are the lenses used by professional photographer in a football field? White or black?” The answer is white and only Canon produces white lenses. When in doubt, always follow the professionals. Like how big companies and their HP’s for its reliability, or rich businessman and their Mercedez-Benz S-Class.

Nikon fanboys would probably argued on the awesomeness of their camera and so on, Canon fanboys will do the same. Personally, I think both system are good, I don’t hate Nikon as much as I dislike Sony DSLR. Sony fanboys are naive, back then when Sony released their very first DSLR, which is the Alpha, Sony fanboy was going ga-ga about it, worshiping it as if this is a god send product from heaven. When asked if given a choice would they purchase a Konica-Minolta DSLR, their answer was NO, because Minolta sucks! The look on their face was priceless when I told them Sony Alpha was basically a re-badge Konica-Minolta, it is the same old system only slightly better because you have the ‘Sony’ logo on it.
We can go on for ages, my advice is, go for a Nikon or Canon, both are equally good, and remember to search for more information on the web, especially forums. You’ll be amazed by the discussion, one thing I learned from these forums are, Nikon after sales services is terrible. Based on my experience, here are the pro and cons of each system:
Canon DSLR Camera pro and cons:
- Better color (Do a comparison, don’t digest everything from a magazine, they are paid to say certain things by the advertiser)
- Lots of lenses to choose from (Canon or alternative)
- Better quality lenses (L-Series, white color/red band)
- Ugly design (I got to admit it, the body’s design is ugly)
- Compatible with Canon Printers
- Faster
Nikon DSLR Camera pro and cons:
- Beautifully crafted body
- Less varieties of lenses compared with Canon, but who needs so many lenses?
- Full-frame cameras are cheaper
- any more?

I have to argue the point of Canon lenses are better. Most of your points are no biased yes, but there’s no comparison between the quality of glass used in Nikon’s lenses. I am a Nikon fan boy but I won’t say “Nikons are always better than Canons” because it isn’t true. But you can tell what kind of camera someone uses by looking at their RAWs. Nikon’s colors are always more vivid and true while Canon has more of this red-ish/bland look.
I have to digress, I find Pentax/Olympus/Fuji produces better, more natural colors straight off the camera. Canon colors are dull and lifeless (even from the 5DMkII), while Nikon colors are exaggerated with pink skin tones.
An entry-level Pentax KX/KR can produce images as good as your top-shelf Canon/Nikons. Keyword here is value. Why pay more when you can achieve the same or better at a lesser price?
Just do a head-to-head comparison. Two of my friends have already sold their Canon gear as a result.
