I can’t really think of the usability of a portable printer, except for occasions such as weddings, or to be more specific, you’re in a middle of nowhere, say a camping trip. I do understand that most printers are ‘portable’ but these small lightweight printers are meant for documents, not photos, therefore it makes sense to bring a portable printer on places where printing and emailing is not possible, say in a remote region of Africa? Here’s what you’ll need to look out for:
- If possible, get one with a scanner function
- Make sure it feeds it’s power source from your laptop, this is to avoid power voltage issue because most laptop comes with power regulator
- Weight is not an issue, since they are portable, they tend to be small. Make sure the shape fits perfectly into your bag
- Get those with an LCD, chances are, you might want to print the photos and don’t have a laptop
- Look out wireless feature, it will me come in handy, especially when you’re busy
- Make sure the quality and speed are acceptable, if it takes too long to print, it simply doesn’t make any sense
Given a choice, I did go for HP Officejet mobile printer. It comes with wireless feature, fast and the quality is superb. The only catch is it doesn’t comes with a LCD. Epson on the other hand has LCD panels on most of their PictureMate printer.

- Portable HP Photosmart and Officejet Printer
All have their pro and cons, it depends on your budget. I’d say if money is not an issue, go for the most expensive printer. As for me, I’ll go for HP Officejet H470 Mobile (Battery Driven Printers). It may be heavier but it comes packed with features.
