How to preserve original image resolution? Reducing the resolution of an image is never an issue, on the other hand, enlarging it seemed to be a problem as pixels get blown up, the image gets jagged or pixelated. SmillaEnlarger is a small graphical tool ( based on Qt ) to resize, especially magnify bitmaps in high quality, below is a side by side comparison of the same image enlarged with Photoshop and SimilaEnlarger.
As shown in the side by side comparison, SimilaEnlarger appears to be smoother whereas the Photoshop end results appears to be ‘grainy’. It seems to me that SimilaEnlarger uses the emboss technique where tones that are almost similar in term of hue/brightness and so on are smudge to remove the potential ‘grainy’ or pixelated outcome. The technique is probably known as Smoothing Filter-based Intensity Modulation.
The user interface is really simple, drag, drop and crop it. If you’re expecting something like those in CSI or FBI where the image can be zoomed in by a factor of 1000 yet remained sharp and crystal clear, forget about it. Tools like these only exist in Hollywood.
