The wise job seeker will use it to catch the attention of these companies by posting comments about their skills and experience in ways that it would connect with the companies. Twitter hash tags can also be used to watch for job postings.
Facebook – Many people have discovered that this avenue invites trouble at work. Companies are monitoring what employees are doing and saying through this social environment. Creative job hunters will use a page to highlight their resume. Potential employers can see the qualifications but also the ingenuity of employee candidates.
Industry websites – Many sites have popped up over the last few years that list jobs in particular industries. Companies list employment opportunities on these sites and individuals can apply with a few clicks of the keyboard. These same sites also allow job seekers to upload resumes.
LinkedIn – Not considered part of the social networks, this site focuses on developing professional relationships. Executives from all of the Fortune 500 companies have signed up as part of LinkedIn. The site offers a job seeking (and listing) option for its users. Not only can you use it to find jobs, but it can allow you to make connections through exiting connections that could lead to the next employment opportunity.
Search engines – A simple search of the internet can reveal job opportunities that might otherwise go unseen. A search that focuses on particular region or even industries can help shine light on a wider range of job listings.
The internet can open up potential employment that would have gone unrecognized with standard search methods. The key to landing that perfect job by using the internet starts with being prepared.
Before Looking Online for an Internet Job
- Invest in a solid resume. The first look you will give employers is your resume. Spend time and effort getting a resume put together that highlights your abilities, experience and education. It may be worth investing in a professionally developed resume to have on hand.
- Know what you are willing to do to land the job. Looking on the internet will open up larger job listings, but these jobs may require relocation or other commitments. Be prepared for the requests and you will not be surprised when they come.
- Learn a little internet etiquette. The internet can be used to find a job, but it can also be a black hole for wasting time. Know what you should do and say to impress the future boss and learn what behaviors to avoid that will leave you overlooked.
The key to landing a job in the current environment is persistence. Keep looking. Use out-of-the box thinking to discover new job opportunities. Search the internet and make connections using social media and other online tools. The more options you can discover then the sooner you will find that new job that you desire.
