When Your “Unlimited” Bandwidth Runs Out

Guest post by Alex Schmidt. “Unlimited bandwidth?! That’s awesome! Sign me up!” Is this what you said when you saw those too good to be true offers from hosting plans? There is really no such thing as “Unlimited Bandwidth” and anyone who is claiming it to be true is actually lying and trying to trick you with their sales and marketing tactic.

Overselling Bandwidth

A red flag should be raised when you see a web hosting service offering the “Unlimited Bandwidth” feature. This isn’t just some sly trick that the small fish web hosts use. Even the well known and most popular web hosting companies use this gimmick to lour in customers.

Bandwidth is the measurement to track data transmission volume over the internet. Instead of just blindly going with “Unlimited” plans it is recommended to know how much bandwidth you will need when you are deciding on a web hosting service.

Broadband companies do not offer “Unlimited Megs per second” so how can a web hosting service, which usually does not own their own private access line, provide customers with “Unlimited Bandwidth.” They’re just gambling on the fact that you’ll never actually reach your bandwidth limit.

Your “Unlimited” Site Just Got Shut Down!

Even on “Unlimited” web hosting plans, many high-bandwidth sites will get disconnected and they will not get a refund. Usually this is a result of using too many resources or bad scripts. Most of the time the web hosting company will tell the site it was in violation of its Acceptable Use Policy or Terms of Service.

It’s a good idea to view the Terms of Service or the Acceptable Use Policy when you’re thinking about a web host who is offering an “Unlimited Bandwidth” feature with their plans. Look in the small text for the details of their “Unlimited” plan and its disclaimer. Many times the user is limited to certain numbers of CPU query uses, nodes, RAM, MySQL databases, and FTP uploads.

Choose Your Web Host Wisely

When you choose a hosting plan from a web host that clearly defines the amount of bandwidth they offer, it’s important to keep track of your usage and make your best estimations to how much bandwidth you will be needing. Think about these variables when you are making an estimation:

  • How large are your graphics and HTML files?
  • How many pages will be open for users to access?
  • How many people will visit your website?

Just remember that large files like video, audio, software programs, flash pages, and other file downloads will take up a lot more bandwidth.

Many people fall for the “Unlimited Bandwidth” trick. I used to believe it myself but have since learned to be skeptical of these promotions. Despite the inaccuracy of these claims, you will still probably get enough bandwidth to get your website off the ground until you can find a larger bandwidth plan.
