Which is the most reliable laptop? SquareTrade analyzed as many as 30,000 new laptops based on their warranty plans and number of claims, they’ve compiled the following Laptop & Netbook reliability comparison and survey (Adobe PDF), the highlights of the study include:
- Looking at the first 3 years of ownership, 31% of laptop owners reported a failure to SquareTrade. Two-thirds of this failure (20.4%) came from hardware malfunctions, and one-third (10.6%) was reported as accidental damage.
- Netbooks are projected to have a 20% higher failure rate from hardware malfunctions than more expensive laptop computers.
- ASUS and Toshiba were the most reliable manufacturers, with fewer than 16% having a hardware malfunction over 3 years.

err… I thought hp is the most reliable or one of the most reliable laptop manufacturer. Well, it doesn’t matter the brand of the laptop, after all, 90% of the laptop in the world are manufactured by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, also known as Foxconn Technology Group (Taiwan). Yes, same goes for your superior an expensive Apple MacBook.
SquareTrade analyzed failure rates for over 30,000 new laptop computers covered by SquareTrade Laptop Warranty plans and found that one-third of all laptops will fail within 3 years. SquareTrade also found that netbooks are 20% more unreliable than other laptops, and that Asus and Toshiba are the most reliable laptop brands.

If you’re looking for an 18.4 Inch large screen laptop, you are limited to a handful of brands. I was thorn between HP HDX18 and Dell XPS, what stops me from buying these models are the price, which is ridiculously high.

The new Acer Aspire AS8940G-6865 18.4″ Notebook comes with Quad-Core Intel Core i7 and Windows 7. It is at least 500 dollars cheaper than Dell and HP. I could get myself a 18 inch laptop and a netbook if I decided to go for an Acer.
Acer is the world’s 3rd largest computer company, after HP and Dell. They are poise to take over the second spot from Dell within a year or two. Having said that, lots of people complain to me on the reliability of Acer’s laptop with frequent hardware failures. Which is not an isolated case happened to Acer only, I bet Toshiba, Sony and all the other laptop manufacturer have the same problem. After all, most laptops are designed by Taiwanese and manufactured by the Chinese.
