Why Do We Need To Sleep?

Why Do We Need To Sleep?

Sleep gives our body a rest after those long working hours, it also gives our brain a chance to sort things out. Well, that is what the scientist said, according to them sleeping helps the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems. The amount of hours needed would be around 8 - 10 hours depending on our age.

Here are some really good reason why we should not skip our sleep!

  • Skipping one night’s sleep makes a person cranky and clumsy.
  • After five nights without sleep, a person will hallucinate
  • Six days sleep restricted to four hours pushed healthy young male volunteers into a pre-diabetic state.
  • Inadequate sleep works on hormone production in other areas as well. Without enough sleep, the central nervous system becomes more active, inhibiting the pancreas from producing adequate insulin, the hormone the body needs to digest glucose.

A groundbreaking University of Chicago study in 1999 showed that just six days of sleep restricted to four hours pushed 11 healthy young male volunteers into a pre-diabetic state. - The Ithaca Journal

    Visible Earth: Earth’s City Lights

    Visible Earth: Earth's City Lights

A beautiful high resolution photograph from NASA of the Earth’s city lights. Simply beautiful, reminds me of a quote, scientist can only dream of going to space but it is the astronaut that goes to space, how ironic.

Even more than 100 years after the invention of the electric light, some regions remain thinly populated and unlit. Antarctica is entirely dark. The interior jungles of Africa and South America are mostly dark, but lights are beginning to appear there. Deserts in Africa, Arabia, Australia, Mongolia, and the United States are poorly lit as well (except along the coast), along with the boreal forests of Canada and Russia, and the great mountains of the Himalaya.

South Korea blocks foreign porn sites

March 26, 2007 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · Comment

I guess it is about time the world follows South Korea’s move, filtering internet content such as porn do not consider as internet censorship like what the western people wanted the east to believe. One of the reason being that no parents in the world wants their child to be expose to such materials, sure one can easily get those imitation pornography CDs on a street or simply download it on Bittorrent, but won’t it be easier to simply ban these kind of website? I just couldn’t understand why The United States Supreme Court is considering whether it is unconstitutional for libraries to block access to internet porn sites.

The Ministry of Information and Communication said it will block 180 foreign sites by May and plans to ban access to others by end of this year after consulting with internet service providers.

It is about time the ICANN get their act together and set up the .xxx domain name for the sake of the world, it would be way much easier for every parents in the world. Goodness, think of the future.

    PS3 Folding@Home For Cancer

    PS3 Folding@Home For Cancer

I hate to admit this but lately my perception on Sony seems to go down hill, possibly due to it’s own act of anguish and fear of change, but then like all bad publicity that Sony had for the past few months from exploding battery to root kit that causes Windows to crash, for once Sony has done something right, could this be the turning point where after all these years of mismanagement Sony is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel?

Folding@home program for Playstation 3 is indeed a good idea, with all those processing power the Playstation posses, it could change the way we look at science and possibly cure some of the well known diseases. So, what I say is don’t go grabbing a Playstation on purpose but if you happen to have one, simply download the program and let it run when you grab a snack or something during gaming hours.

Sony has confirmed that owners of Internet-connected ARM powered PlayStation 3 (PS3) systems will be able to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project which is looking to better understand protein folding and its relationship with several debilitating diseases, including canser, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

What are you waiting for? Go download it now! Download Folding@Home on PS3
