DRM Free Universal Music but Not On Apple’s iTunes

Universal Music Group is conducting an experiment where they’ll be offering most of their music catalog DRM free for a period of six months only, the down side is - Apple’s iTunes is not invited to join the party.

It appears that Universal is boycotting Apple, Gods know for whatever reason it maybe but their plan could possibly backfire if Apple manage to pull off another ‘must have ipod’ and continue dominating the world of mp3 player.

While Sony and Toshiba may be lock in the High Definition format battle of the century, Apple seems to have found the solution and probably is bypassing both of them right now. Downloading movies was the future, the keyword is was but what if we’re able to rent a movie and watch it online, sort of like going to a cinema but not quite there.

Apple is betting that renting movie online would be the next in thing and I am willing to bet with them, its about time video renting company do the same. The new service may be coming this Fall, and will cost $2.99 for a 30-day rental. Which is pretty reasonable and this could possible be the solution for piracy in countries like China, simply imagine having the ability to watch movie for as low as USD3 in China?

Hidden Information in iTunes

Apple’s iTunes Plus system, launched this week, where users pay a premium for music that is DRM free, technically it is free of DRM but Apple decided that these DRM free mp3s should consist of your personal information such as names and email address.

Isn’t that scary, what if your comp was hacked into and someone downloaded those mp3s and it ends up in some file sharing network, you’re roasted! RIAA is going to sue you!

The discovery of the data, of which most iTunes users will have been unaware, would be yet another drawback for a real DRM free mp3s. Love it, hate it, mp3s and file sharing networks are here to stay.

No worries mate, someone will come up with a way to somehow remove or alter the names and email address in these mp3s.

Apple and EMI ditching DRM is good, but it's not good enough

Yesterday, Apple together with EMI announce to the world of music that finally they are ditching DRM in music, probably due to the fact that Yahoo and Sony did that long time ago, technically this would in turn means that the entire EMI collection in iTunes would be completely DRM free, meaning so say that you are no longer stuck with an iPod. If things goes accordingly, I would purchase some mp3 from iTunes that is DRM free, to walk the talk.
