Kaspersky Mac - Antivirus Protection Software For Macintosh OSX

Its official now, Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac is now available for download. As one of the leading antivirus solution in the market, Kaspersky is charging $59.95 for a single license. Personally, I find this somewhat too expensive, considering the fact that Mac OS doesn’t come with that many threat.

Features and requirements:

  • Intel-based Macintosh computer (PowerPC processor not supported)
  • 512 MB free RAM
  • 100 MB free hard drive space
  • Mac OS X 4/10/11 operating system, or higher
  • Real-time scanning of files
  • Uses the latest Kaspersky antivirus technologies
  • Fast and non-intrusive with only 1% CPU impact on your Mac performance

Is the money worth investing on an antivirus for mac? To be honest, no. The chances of a Mac being infected with a virus or any other malware is really slim. Unless the Mac is for general public like in a library or for small business purposes, I don’t see a reason for purchasing an antivirus.

If you’re into freeware, try the free iAntivirus and CalmXav for mac.

With the ever increasing popularity and market share of Mac OS X, so does the number of virus and malware written exclusively for Mac. Apart from its growing market share, another reason why Mac OS X attracts more malicious code is because Mac computers are not protected, thus they are an easy target due to the lack of antivirus installed onto the system.

The Windows market is over crowded with antivirus software, however Mac OS X is an untapped market, therefore explains the reason why more and more antivirus company are coding antivirus software for Mac.

The latest being F-Secure, they’ve just introduced their new Mac Protection Technology Preview program for Mac OS X 10.5 powered by Intel processor. The company’s aim is to provide protection against malware with minimal impact on the performance of your Mac computer.

F-Secure Mac Protection is not exactly free, since it is still in beta stage, they are offering a free one-year subscription for beta testers and regular prizes for users who actively send them useful feedback.
