A Taiwanese research institute has produced a new global memory card standard, called the miCard (Multiple Interface Card), the miCard has a transfer rate of 480 Mbits per second and a store capacity of 8GB, but the maximum capacity is expected to top out around 2,048GB. Which could easily replace current hard disk if the price of the 2TB card is reasonable. SanDisk better watch their back now!

One of the reason for the development of this card is due to the high royalty fees Taiwan company has to pay. So far, 12 Taiwanese companies have signed on to manufacture the miCard, according to its inventor, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, but the real issue here is, would the hardware company join the fight? Why should they and why would they consider the fact that SD card is an open source format?
