Attention all Firefox user, Mozilla Firefox 3 is now available for download. My first impression was - the user interface is still the same, feature wise it is reasonable. I was hoping for the ‘paste and go’ URL that Opera introduced years ago, it is so convenient.

Opera Browser Feature URL

I’m not a big fan of add-ons, therefore I can’t comment on that either, but time will tell if they manage to plug the memory leak issue and the possibility of losing our bookmarks whenever Forefox 3 crash, yes, Firefox 3 is not as stable as they claimed it to be, based on my personal experience IE appears to be much more solid.

Some of the new features are:

  • Malware Protection
  • Anti-virus integration
  • Vista Parental Controls
  • Effective top-level domain (eTLD) service better restricts cookies and other restricted content to a single domain.
  • New Web Forgery Protection page

If you’re into security, Mozilla Firefox 3 is the number one choice.

Opera 9.5 - Beautifully Engineered

Opera 9.5 - Beautifully Engineered

Opera 9.5 - Beautifully engineered, and indeed it is. Browsing has never been so fast and pleasant, I have to confess I am falling for the latest release. Before I talk about the browser, let us recap my favorite browser 10 years ago.

1996 Netscape
1997 Internet Explorer 5
1999 Opera 1.x
2001 Internet Explorer 6 / Opera
2002 Internet Explorer
2003 Mozilla
2008 Opera 9.5?

Opera 9.5 is truly an amazing browser, it has what safari, Internet Explorer and Mozilla lacks of, and as a user of Mozilla Firefox 2, I have to admit that Firefox is unstable, and when ever the browser crashed, I tend to lose all of my bookmarks - months and months of precious information are lost, not once but probably a dozen of time.

Looking sharp: Opera makes a move to modernize its look and feel to a sharp new skin with clean lines and clear icons. The ‘New Tab’ button and other elements have been modified to make the switch to a better Web experience more intuitive.

New Feature in Opera 9.5 - Speed Dial
Below is a screen shot of speed dial in action, typing addresses for sites you visit frequently is ineffective. Get your favorite Web page with just one click. Speed Dial is a set of visual bookmarks you see when you open a new tab, like a dashboard for your online life. To add a new page, simply click on an empty Speed Dial and Opera will make suggestions based on browsing history and bookmarks.

Opera 9.5 - Quick Find and Quick Search
Have you ever forgotten the page where you found that great article or that perfect gift? When using Opera the browser remembers not only the titles and addresses, but the actual content of the Web pages you visit. Below is a screen shot of quick search with Google.

Some other unique features are:

  • Download Manager with BitTorrent
  • Opera’s Fraud Protection
  • Faster handling of third party plug-ins
  • Much faster start up time
  • Superior support for Web standards

Opera 9.5 has set the new benchmark and Mozilla Firefox has lots of catching up to do. If the memory leak issue and the thoughts of losing my bookmark again occurs, I shall move on to another platform - probably IE or Opera, Safari is just not what I had in mind, probably because of the text rendering engine.

Discover the new standard in Web browsing. Download Opera today to get the fastest and most powerful Web browser available and make the most of your time online.

Mozilla Firefox Patch mozila 3 patch upgrade download

According to research, Mozilla Firefox is the best open source browser in the market, but fact is Mozilla Firefox 2 is the worst browser ever in the market.

One of the problem faced by Mozila Firefox is the memory leak issue, initially I was skeptic and thought that this could be a PC problem, or some bias review from the Microsoft camp, much to my surprise, it wasn’t a bias review and the rumors for once turned out to be true. Mozilla Firefox indeed has a memory leak issue, try loading 10 website simultaneously, yes, it lacks so badly - that is the memory leak bug found in all version 2 browser.

Good news for Firefox 2 user, the up and coming Mozilla Firefox 3 manage to solve the memory leak issue, currently in beta, Mozilla Firefox 3 is available for download at the official website. With the memory leak issue, mozilla firefox is still gaining market share - it could be that nobody notice the memory leak bug, how many net user actually launch 10 new websites simultaneously?

mozilla data graph chart

Flock, an open source browser based on the Mozilla engine was able to solve the memory leak issue. If you’re a firefox fan and reluctant to switch camp, try some other alternative browser such as Safari from Apple and Opera Browser.

Talking about Opera browser, the browser is believed to be the fastest, at least according to experts, I am not entirely convinced that this is the case. One of the reason for me to doubt the super fast loading speed of Opera is the way it render and cache website. I believe Opera display images and text after loading the page to about 80% whereas IE, Safari and Firefox display the images and text as they load. More of an illusion of speed. After all, with broadband widely available through out the nation, even in a third world country, speed is no longer the selling point. Security is.

Interested in knowing more about Firefox? Read up the history and background of Mozilla Firefox in Wikipedia. I was astonished to know that it was called Phoenix, follow by Firebird and eventually Firefox.

The Minimo Project - PDA Web Browser

January 13, 2007 · Filed Under Software · 1 Comment

minimo_logo.pngThe Minimo has been focused on code-size and runtime footprint reduction, small screen usablity, and porting to small consumer devices. The Mozilla guys hope to make Minimo the browser of choice on small devices, or machines with limited system resources; taking advantage of Mozilla’s support for a broad and comprehensive set of standards and the variety of content on the web, proven security, international support, and cross platform capability.

1.jpg

I’ve tested it on my Dell Axim x51v and I have to say minimo is a big let down, it takes up too much memory, cause a slight lag when I run other applications. With the iPhone around the corner, future phone are bound to have a wide screen with wifi, this is where Mozilla comes in. Mozilla’s minimo has a lot of improvement to do if they are serious about wining over the crowd.

Mozilla Releases Firefox 2.0 RC3

October 17, 2006 · Filed Under Software · 1 Comment

Mozilla Releases Firefox 2.0 RC3

Mozilla has released Firefox 2.0 RC3 to the public. This is the last developmental for Firefox 2.0 and work has already commenced on Firefox 3.0. Firefox 2.0 has tons of new features compared to its 1.5.0.x predecessors. With the current on slaughter, IE is losing share everyday to Firefox, good for your Bill Gates - I hate Mircosoft business tactics but not all of their products - I love hotmail and msn.

“The difference between RC2 and RC3 is basically a small set of some stability fixes and some small security issues that we wanted to make sure made the release,” Mozilla’s vice president for engineering, Mike Schroepfer told internetnews.com.

Anyway the changes include :

    - Improved tabbed browsing
    - Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds
    - an updated user interface
    - built-in anti-phishing
    - inline spell checking
    - improved tabbed browsing
    - search capabilities
    - browser session recovery

If you happen to be a Firefox fan and also a Blogger Blogspot user, then try the Blogger Firefox Template. Simple and clean layout.

Symantec slams Firefox again (and again)

September 25, 2006 · Filed Under Security · 1 Comment

Symantec slams Firefox again

I guess Firefox is not as safe as what they said it would be. There were 47 vulnerabilities documented in Mozilla browsers this year, 38 bugs for Microsoft Internet Explorer and 12 holes for Apple’s Safari, but when it comes to fixing bugs, Mozilla still stop the list with a respond to bugs within a day or two, wherelse Microsoft takes 9 feaking days, Apple on the other hand took 5 days.

Security in Internet browser is a major issue, and with the current market of equally divided share among these competitors, trojans and worms are harder to spread. What the market need is another browser to have an equal number of the pie. Perhaps Opera Browser might make an impact in the near future, afterall, they’re the first browser to introduce tab browsing.

I used to browse the web with Opera, its fast but very unstable. I was annonyed with the constant crashing and hanging of the browser and eventually make a come back to Internet Explorer, it was only 2 years ago I come accross this new browser called Firefox and I never look back. Firefox rulez.

Why Can’t Microsoft Comply With W3C Guidelines?

August 13, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 3 Comments

Jarhead John dropped this comment at Andreas07:

I used the template, and it works fine. However, I recently “upgraded” to IE7, and it doesn’t display properly with it. The sidbar (right) overlaps with the posts. Works fine with IE5,6,NT,etc. Any ideas? You can view it at http://wearredonfridays.blogspot.com/

This is what I fear the most, why can’t the guys at Microsoft follow the W3C guidelines? What the F___K is wrong with them? I have a hard time booting the wordpress theme to blogger, 90% of the times it doesn’t display properly in IE6, its a breeze to comply with Firefox. Microsoft is a big bully and they thinks that the world would be a better place if everyone follow their way. Enough is enough!

I hate to do this, I think its about time people say no for a change. Well, we can’t unseat Microsoft in the OS market anymore, but what we can do is use firefox, download firefox and stop using IE. Support Google and others.

Ironically, I’ve just finish reading the Icon, a book about Steve Jobs. Apple and their Macintosh is very much a closed system, between Microsoft and Apple, there is more freedom in programming and upgrading your computers when it comes to Microsoft system… I guess I have to choose the lesser evils - Microsoft. That’s ironic.
