Yahoo opens email code

Yahoo, one of the world’s largest email provider in the world is planning to release their email code to the world. One of the crown jewels of its business, in a bid to encourage software developers to build new applications based on email.

The move to open up the underlying code of Yahoo Mail - used by 257 million people - is designed to spark development of thousands of new email applications built not only by Yahoo engineers but by outside companies and individuals.

Recalling what the Linux world is predicting, as the world of computers becomes a complex eco-system, it is getting harder and harder for a single company to develope or manage complex software, a very good example would be Microsoft’s Windows Vista, due to its close source system, the much waited next release of windows has been delayed for 2 years plus.

Open source applications like Google Maps and Yahoo’s Flickr have created a new approch in web programming, where developers from all around the world combine and innovate around these software thus create a whole new experience. These approach are called “mashups”.

Speacking of “mashups”, there seems to be some movement in Googleplex, Google has been grabbing a lot of domain names that has the “mashups” word to it. Below are some of the list:

* mashupssearch.com
* search-mash.com
* search-mashes.com
* search-mashup.com
* search-mashups.com
* searchmashup.net

What could a “Google Search Mashup” service be for?
