Microsoft and Yahoo to Merge?

There is this hype and speculation around a rumored $50 billion merger between Microsoft and Yahoo, something which is unlikely to happen anytime soon largely because of Yahoo’s disinterest in the deal, simply imagine the overlapping of workforce and softwares, it would be chaotic. This speculation came about due to the successive acquisitions of DoubleClick by Google, something that left both Microsoft and Yahoo in the dust. Google is beating Yahoo and Microsoft in almost every field, even in a friendly Google vs Yahoo tennis competition.

Yahoo offers Web Instant Messaging

Yup, you are now able to log into your Yahoo IM with any web browser in any computer, sort of like the web ICQ. The service is tailored for use by travelers, workers whose employers block software downloads to company machines. Web Yahoo Messenger is available online at http://webmessenger.yahoo.com. It may be known as Web Yahoo Messenger but do remember that you are able to chat with your friends who are on MSN Live. I guess it is a matter of time before MSN Live introduce a Web version of MSN Messenger.

Yahoo! Alpha - Google Custom Search Engine Gets a Competitor

This is what I am talking about, a fully customize search engine for everyone. Yahoo seems to be moving the right path by introducing the Alpha search engine which is currently in beta mode. It is believed to be better in term of user friendliness.

Instead of just returning results in text form, it search for images and videos at the same time. There is also results form Wikipedia and others. There’s also a special module called “Sponsored Results” that displays text ads based on your search query.

Yahoo Aplha is currently in beta, I can’t wait for version 1.0 to be release. Finally Google has a new found enemy. Go ahead and give it a try!

New Yahoo Widget

The all new Yahoo Widget with better engine and widget is here, basically what they do was to create some sort of replacement bar for Windows Vista’s widget bar, probably Yahoo find that Microsoft is again bullying and killing off competitor. Well, that’s competition right?

Anyway, the new engine is way much lighter than the previous version 3 and uses up 40% less memory, which is something good for laptop user. Another good news is, it comes with both support for PC and a Mac, this is how it should be, big corporate should create softwares for mac, especially Linux. Like all good things, I believe Yahoo Widget would somehow end up like Netscape, crushed by Microsoft. The only way for them to survive is to innovate, create an online version of Yahoo Widget, allow bloggers the ability to insert the code into their blog.

Some information: Yahoo Widgets, previously called Konfabulator, was acquired by Yahoo in July 2005.

Google overtakes Yahoo in user visits

Would you believe this? Microsoft is the most visited web? Source from Zee News says:

Google overtook Yahoo as the second most popular internet destination for web surfers worldwide in November while Microsoft held on to the top spot, Comscore has reported.

Microsoft first? For a non internet company, this is a big slap on all those internet company.

New Media: Reuters & Yahoo News

Internet and blogs are both a deadly combination, almost every human has the ability to post what they feel about a particular products and events, I guess this must be the dawn of media evolution.

Yahoo News is the latest offering from Yahoo, sign up and you can be a contributor to the No. 1 news site on the net. I am loving this. :) I guess innovation still exist in Yahoo, Google on the other hand seems to posses the ability to purchase and not give birth to innovation.

Many news organizations turned to photographs taken by amateurs to supplement coverage of events like the London subway bombing and the Asian tsunami. Yahoo’s news division has already used images that were originally posted on Flickr, the company’s photo-sharing site. For example, it created a slide show of images from Thailand after the coup there in September. - New York Times
