How to piss me off with online video sharing websites

May 15, 2008 · Filed Under Life Log · Comment

azureus online video streaming

The idea of sharing an internet connection with strangers can be really annoying, not that I have a choice, but was forced to because the landlord says so, I do have the option of acquiring my own telephone line but it is going to cost me a bomb.

Long story short, the situation was made worst when I am forced to share the internet connection with 7 people in the house; the best part is the broadband connection quota for every month capped at 40GB. That is like 170MB for each person per day, which is hardly enough. The 40GB cap per month is the ceiling quota from the company.

Since the broadband internet connection is limited to 40GB per month, why can’t these users be more considerate? Is it a must to watch funny videos online, multimedia sites such as YouTube really annoys me, especially video streaming sites that uses torrent technology.

I found a few ways to block Azureus, but could not find a solution towards the much more popular p2p video streaming software known as ppstream.com, its a Chinese video streaming website that utilize p2p technology and it is really killing the bandwidth. As much as I would like to scream ‘Go back to China’, but that is somewhat rude. (No racism here, I’m Chinese but not from China)

Buying a new VPN modem is out of the question, it is just way too expensive and why should I be the one paying for the hardware? P2P technology, it is a love hate relationship. God help me.

How to Access YouTube If It Is Blocked or Filtered

May 9, 2008 · Filed Under How To and Online Tutorials · 1 Comment

After toying around with my router for a few weeks, I’ve discovered various ways of accessing youtube or any other websites using different techniques such as IP address and proxy surfing. These are simple techniques that do not require the help of a computer nerd.

The IP Address technique - little knowledge is needed, all you need to do is key in the IP address of youtube server, and you’re in, this technique works if the network administrator doesn’t block the ip address of the server. Usually the network administrator filters website based on the URL address and not the IP address.

How to Access YouTube If It Is Blocked or Filtered

The other technique is proxy surfing - embedproxies.com is the only proxy site that doesn’t disable javascript, thus allowing you to watch videos from youtube, for websites that doesn’t utilize javascript such as youtube, any other proxy sites are good enough.

Please use these methods at your own risk, be advised that, most network administrator monitor the web traffic and your chances of getting caught for bypassing their filters are literally quite high.

US Army Block MySpace and YouTube

US Army Block MySpace and YouTube

It appears thats the US Army is blocking access to site like YouTube and MySpace, reason being that it hogs bandwidth and it is a threat to the army security if any important data leaks, which is yet to be seen or hear of.

I find this ironic, considering the fact that US is the champion of freedom of speech, on top of that military personal uses these site to keep in touch with their friends and relatives, cutting off them is like cutting off their oxygen, sure there is always email, but email don’t provide the same service.

Army Times has this to say:

“This is as much an information war as it is bombs and bullets,” he said. “And they are muzzling their best voices.”

MySpace and YouTube are not the only victims, other sites covered by the ban are the video-sharing sites Metacafe, IFilm, StupidVideos, and FileCabi, the social networking sites BlackPlanet and Hi5, music sites Pandora, MTV, and 1.fm, and live365, and the photo-sharing site Photobucket.

What happen to sites like Friendster or Flickr?

YouTube faces another 'Copyright infringement' lawsuit

YouTube faces another ‘Copyright infringement’ lawsuit, this time it is the England’s top soccer league and an independent U.S. music publisher. No amount of compensation was claimed but this won’t be the end, Google made a big mistake by purchasing YouTube together with all those illegal content, but according to Google general counsel Kent Walker said, “These suits simply misunderstand the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which balances the rights of copyright holders against the need to protect internet communications and content.

Viacom to sue Google and YouTube for USD1Billion

March 13, 2007 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Viacom to sue Google and YouTube for USD1BillionThe owner of MTV Networks decided to sue Google and YouTube for copyright violation, this would be an interesting court case and the out come would definitely change the way people share videos online. I still couldn’t figure it out why would Google buy YouTube when they know this sort of things would come, let YouTbe battle the court case and then bail them out like what happen to napster, provided the price is right.

Viacom’s claim says almost 160,000 unauthorized snippets of Viacom shows have been viewed more than 1.5 billion times on YouTube. Viacom also owns Paramount Pictures movie studios and the Nickelodeon cable network.

(Video) Message from YouTube’s Founders

October 11, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · Comment

I bet both YouTube co-founders Chad and Steve are laughing all their way to the bank. With the recent acquisition of their company by Google, they have solve most of their problem concerning copyright and especially bandwidth issue. If YouTube popularity continue to soar, I guess they’ll join the rank of billionaires within a year or two. Watch the video below.

The price makes YouTube Inc., a still-unprofitable startup, by far the most expensive purchase made by Google during its eight-year history. Last year, Google spent $130.5 million buying a total of 15 small companies.

Google Buys YouTube

October 9, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · 2 Comments

Google Buys YouTubeIts official now that Google has accquire YouTube. Now I wonder what has Google install for their own Google Video? YouTube is a success because there is so many illegal videos, unlike those from MSN, Yahoo and Google Video, YouTube has a library of pirated video clips and a soon to be launch lawsuits. YouTube needs to sort things out and remove those illegal videos before they turn into the Napster of yesteryears.

Guess what would be the name? But then there won’t be changes right? since Google said they wanted to preserve their overall structure and brand as independent as possible. Then again, this might change within a year or two and below are some examples:

Google YouTube
Google Tube
Google Videos
Googe Tube
or any other ?

Google announced today that it has agreed to acquire YouTube, the consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos through a Web experience, for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Following the acquisition, YouTube will operate independently to preserve its successful brand and passionate community.

Google Buying YouTube?

October 7, 2006 · Filed Under Sci and Tech · 2 Comments

Google Buying YouTubeA source tells the Journal that Google is talking to YouTube about buying the video company for $1.6 billion. If they do buy YouTube for its technical reasons then it would be an ideal deal, but if Google were to purchase its content and especially its community, then its a total failure. Friendster is a good example, if you have a bad service; the community will move on to a better one. If Google were to puchase YouTube, they have to maintain what YouTube has to offer to the community and on top of that enhance it with Google’s services.

If Google did buy YouTube, what would happen to these lawsuits for stolen content? My best bet is that these company that is suing YouTube may hold off for a bit, but for how long? Nobody want to offend Google in this digital age right? With Google as the internet King, you stand to lose more than gaining by getting de-list from their search engine.
