According to online reviews, HP Officejet Pro 8500 is a very good printer with many features such as dual-printing, scanner, fax, wireless and ethernet, Eco Star labeled, however, it is not cat friendly. This printer makes a loud high frequency noise where my cat leaves the house as soon as the printer is turned on. Not ideal if you happened to install this printer in a quiet environment.

May 20th, 2009I purchased the 8500 and cannot take the high pitch sound. I called HP support indicatd I needed tech support which was useless. While I was on the phone for 2 hours I searched 8500 high pitch sound and found everyone is having the problem. I hear the sound after hours. This printer needs to be recalled.

July 8th, 2009I just found this thread/review and am finding out the same. The high pitched noise is unbearable. One of my co-workers can’t hear it at all (must be deaf to that particular frequency) but everyone else can and in a small office the level of noise is unacceptable. Noise during printing is, but the high frequency noise is there ALL the time printing or not. How could this have slipped by QC?? Are HP QA/QC testers deaf?

August 10th, 2009I too find the high-pitched noise unbearable. If it was just while printing would be tolerable but it is constant while the printer is turned on, until it goes into power-saving mode. I will be returning for a refund. Although the reason for return probably won’t make it back to HP design/manufacturing, maybe they’ll see these forum comments.

September 15th, 2009I just got this printer and the high pitch noise is really irritating. I just opened the box about an hour ago and installed the drivers. The noise is killing me. I’m sending it back.
